Dr. Noel-Paul Laur, Accompanist
Noel-Paul Laur joined the Amarillo Civic Chorus (now the Amarillo Master Chorale) in 1997 and became the rehearsal and concert accompanist in 1998. He accompanied the Amarillo College Concert Choir from 1996 – 1999, and again from 2008 - present. He currently serves as the Organist-Associate Music Director for Polk Street United Methodist Church in Amarillo (since 2004) where he assists with the music ministry, performs all organ duties, directs two handbell choirs and one handchime choir, accompanies three choral groups, and helps plan worship; the rehearsal and concert accompanist for the Amarillo Youth Choirs (since 2001) – four singing groups; and the organist for St. Andrew’s Episcopal School (Amarillo)’s weekday Chapel services (since 2005). Mr. Laur previously served churches in Illinois, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Arizona, California, Pennsylvania and Texas.
Dr. Laur was born in Tillsonburg, Ontario, Canada. Education includes: an Associate of Music Performer’s Diploma (Organ) from Talbot College, University of Western Ontario, London, ONT (1977); a Bachelor of Music Performer’s Degree (Organ) from Wheaton College Conservatory of Music, Wheaton, IL (1978); a Master of Church Music (Organ, Conducting) from Westminster Choir College, Princeton, NJ (1980). He earned the degree Doctor of Worship Studies from The Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies, Orange Park, FL in June, 2008.
Also to his credit are the following certificates from the American Guild of Organists, New York, NY: the Service Playing Certificate (1981); the Colleague Certificate (1983); the Associate Certificate (1993); the Choir Master Certificate (1996); the Fellowship Certificate (2006). His teachers have included: piano – Joyce Laur and William Phemister; organ – Laura Bragg, John Inch, Edmund Wright, Stephen Cushman, Donald McDonald, Mark Brombaugh, Frank McConnell, Charles Parsons and Peter Brown; conducting – Rex Hicks, John Kemp, Frauke Haasemann and Joseph Flummerfelt; voice – James McKeever and Marvin Keenze. Mr. Laur is a member of: The American Bell Association, The Hymn Society, The Choristers Guild, The National Association of Church Musicians, The Fellowship of Methodists in Music and Worship Arts, and The Royal School of Church Music.
Dr. Laur is married to Debra (Weaver) Laur (since 1980) who serves as the Director of Early Childhood Ministries at First Presbyterian Church in Amarillo. His oldest son, Chrysler (U.S. Army – Military Police, 2005-2009), served in Iraq from December, 2006 through February, 2008. His other son, Carter (U.S. Navy - Corpsman), served in Iraq from March, 2008 through September, 2008 and in Afghanistan from September, 2009 through April, 2010. His oldest daughter, Carling, is a sophomore at Amarillo College, majoring in real estate. His other daughter, Caitlin, is a senior at Randall High School and will be joining the U.S. Marines in August, 2010.
